Description

Zinc etching plates offer a smooth, predictable surface that makes them a favourite among printmakers working in line etching, aquatint and tonal processes. These plates are ideal for artists preparing a zinc plate for etching, providing a clean bite, controllable tones, and excellent handling in both teaching and studio environments. Each plate is precision-cut from high-quality zinc sheet and can be trimmed or cut to your exact working size.

Zinc Etching Plates – Surface & Preparation Details

Our zinc plates are manufactured with a flat, even surface that responds consistently to hard and soft grounds, drawing tools, aquatint sprays and stop-out techniques. The metal’s reliable etching behaviour allows artists to achieve crisp lines and evenly developed tonal ranges. Plates are supplied with protective interleaving or film (where available) to minimise handling marks during transit — simply degrease before applying grounds.

FAQs – Zinc Etching Plates

Is zinc good for etching and aquatint?
Yes. Zinc offers a clean, even bite when etching and reacts predictably during aquatint development. This makes it excellent for teaching environments and detailed tonal work.

What thickness is best for etching zinc plate?
1.0mm zinc is the standard for printmaking, offering rigidity without becoming difficult to bevel or prepare. Heavier plates such as 1.2mm or 1.5mm can be supplied for repeated use or deeper bites.

Can these be used with ferric chloride?
Yes — zinc plates can be etched effectively using ferric chloride or other suitable etching solutions. Always check your studio’s recommended safety procedures.

Do you offer custom-cut zinc plates?
Yes. We offer free trimming on all stocked sizes and can supply bespoke dimensions or layouts to suit your press bed or project.
