Hammered Brass Sheet
Grade
This is CZ106 cartridge Brass with a mirror finish, hand-beaten by a traditional coppersmith in the UK.
Beating Process
Being hand-beaten, the pattern is quite random, and the dimples vary a little in size. Machine-beaten brass has a regular pattern, and all the dimples are the same. KraftMetals Hammered Hand-Bbeaten Brass is 0.7mm thick, which is about the thickest you can beat by hand; machine-beaten brass is usually about 0.5mm thick.
Fabrication
The beating process does stretch the sheet a little, and it develops a slight curve. The curve can be rolled out, or if the Brass sheet is folded, it flattens out. Quite often, the Hand-Beaten Brass sheet is bonded to a backing board like MDF or plywood and clamped in position until the glue is set. This also removes any curve. If you are making small items, the
curve would hardly be noticeable.
Tarnishing
Hammered hand-beaten brass comes with a peelable protective plastic film. After removal, the brass is open to the air and will eventually start to tarnish. The tarnish can be removed with Brasso-type products. The time to maintenance can be greatly extended by applying our Renaissance Wax, which gives
an added layer of protection.
Uses
Hand-beaten brass is used, for example, to make traditional round tabletops, kitchen features, cooker hoods, chimney breast features, and general décor items.
