Zinc Etching Plates – Surface & Preparation Details

Our zinc plates are manufactured with a flat, consistent surface that responds reliably to hard and soft grounds, drawing tools, aquatint sprays and stop-out techniques. This allows artists to achieve crisp lines, controlled tonal ranges and even etching results.

Plates are supplied with protective interleaving or film (where available) to minimise handling marks during transit — simply degrease before applying grounds.

FAQs – Zinc Etching Plates

Is zinc good for etching and aquatint?

What thickness is best for etching zinc plate?
1.0mm zinc is the standard for printmaking, offering rigidity without becoming difficult to bevel or prepare. Heavier plates such as 1.2mm or 1.5mm can be supplied for repeated use or deeper bites.

Can these be used with ferric chloride?
Yes — zinc plates can be etched effectively using ferric chloride or other suitable etching solutions. Always follow appropriate studio safety procedures.
